hi i’m jenny from the msqc. today i want to tell you about this darlinglittle project. i’m always looking for something fun andnew to do with pre cuts. and some of little granddaughters needed anew skirt. and so we thought, what a perfect opportunityto use a pre cut and make them a darling little skirt. hi i’m jenny from the msqc. today i wantto tell you about this darling little project. i’m always looking for something fun andnew to do with pre cuts. and some of little granddaughters needed a new skirt. and sowe thought, what a perfect opportunity to

use a pre cut and make them a darling littleskirt. so to make this little skirt you’re going to need one charm pack and a littleover a ⅓ of a yard of fabric. better get a half to be safe. you’re going to needa piece of elastic that goes around their waist. and for this project today the fabricwe’re using is called great scots and it’s, it’s by gretta lynn and it’s for canvasfabric line. and so it is darling. we really love it. so i’ll show you how to do this.you’re going to need, you’re going to use 36 squares out of your charm pack. andyou’re going to put them together in three rows. the first row is going to have nine squares.and you’re going to just randomly pick them

out and sew a quarter of an inch seam. youknow, two together, four together, you know two sets of four until you make a row of nine.the next row had 12 like this. and then the last row has 15. so you have three rows ofcharms sewn together. nine, 12 and 15. and then you’re going to cut three four inchstrips. these are four inch strips of a contrasting fabric. that’s this right here. we’remaking the bottom band. and we’re also making the waist band. so you really only need a⅓ of a yard of fabric and then you want to make sure you have room, you know a littlewiggle room in case there’s a boo boo or something. so here’s your, your three four inch strips.and i’ve cut them and i’ve ironed them

in half like this. i sewed this one will goon the top for the waist band. it will go up here. this one i sewed two of them togetherright here. and i just pressed that seam open for less bulk. you know it just, it doesn’treally matter either way but that’s just how i did it. and i cut off my selvedge endhere at this end. and i’m going to put this strip of fabric along the bottom edge of mybottom row. and this is going to make the hem. and it’s already going to be done andfinished. no turning under or anything. so i’m just going to lay this right sides together.and we’re going to sew all the way down this side, quarter of an inch and then pressit open. so let’s go to the sewing machine and do that.

alright so i’ve got this laid right alongthe edge. and i’m just going to go ahead and sew this down. ok i’m almost to theend right here and presto we’re finished. so now what we’re going to do is we’regoing to trim off this strip. let me trim these threads. we’re going to trim off thisstrip right here even with the charm pack. so we’ll just cut it off right like that.then we’re going to go press it open and we’re going to press this so that this seamright here comes up onto the charm pack. because the next thing we’re going to do is we’regoing to topstitch this line just right along this edge and that will hold that seam down.so let’s go ahead and press this open and again i’m going to press this to make suremy seam is at the, up onto the top of the

charm pack. and it really wants to do thatbecause the seam always wants to lay in the direction of the biggest bulk so it will,it will slide up there pretty easily. i’m kind of pushing it up there with my fingeras i’m going along. and now what we want to do is topstitch and the reason we’regoing to go ahead and topstitch this down is so that it holds that seam up there andit will help with fraying. you know if you had a serger or something, you could sergeright along that seam. but i would still topstitch it down. i just like that finished look. so when you topstitch you just make sure, this is the stitch that everyone is going to see so you want to make sure it’s goodand straight. and i hope i can do that for

you. and but what we’re going to do is youwant, you want to line up, have a good guide lined up on your sewing machine. so i havea place on my foot. i always make sure that seam runs right along the side of it. andthat helps me get a good straight edge. so i’m just going to come along here. and it’sok to go nice and slow on this. and you can see right here that, see that edge is goingto be nice, it’s going to be uniform because i’m following right along this fold. soi will just stitch this up and meet you back here. so now i’m going to do the same thing tothe top. i’m going to take my, my folded piece. i’m going to clip off my selvedge.and i’m just going to go ahead and sew this

right along this top edge just like i didon the bottom edge. so now i sewed the bottom edge of the skirt and now i’ve sewn thetop. and you can see right along here, i did my topstitching but i also have another rowof stitching along the side of the fabric band that i folded. and what that does isit’s going to keep that waist band from twisting and turning. that’s just a little,a little tip i learned when doing, i used to do a lot of clothing sewing. and it keepsthat waist band from turning. ok so now we’re ready to put these threetiers together. and we’re going to need to do some gathering. the gathering, there’sall kinds of ways to do gathering. my favorite way is to use a zig zag stitch or just topin it a lot so that you’re just easing

the gathers through while you’re sewingrather than doing all that gathering work. i’m going to show you the zig zag way andthe pinning way. and so i’ll start with this bottom piece. the bottom piece we’regoing to have to gather in so that it fits to this middle piece. the middle piece wewill also gather in so that it fits to the top. so let’s go ahead and run a gatheringstitch on this. and i’ll show you how i do that. so over here at the sewing machine you haveyour top thread and you have your bottom thread. i’m going to put my top thread behind hereand i’m going to hold onto this bottom thread. and i’m going to change my sewing machineso that it does a zig zag. and i am going

to move my settings so that they are as wideand as long as they will possibly go. so my settings are on 4.0 and 7.0 for the widthand the length. i just want a really big stitch. and i’m going to make sure that the, mybobbin thread is, i’m pulling it out of the sewing machine. i have a big long pieceso that it will stretch all the way along the top of my fabric. and then i’m justgoing to zig zag over the top of it. so i’m going to line up my, my thread right there.and you’ll be able to see this coming out the back of my sewing machine. i keep thethread right in the middle between the zig zags. and this is the quickest and easiesti know to do a gather without worrying about breaking a zillion threads. oop. i kind ofhad a zig in my zag right there but that will

be alright because we can always take the,the gathering out at the end. so now i”m going to pull this out and i’m remembering,oh, which one is, there’s my bobbin thread right there. so now you can see i have thislittle bobbin thread in there and it just pulls so easily. i mean you can just really.you don’t have to worry about your bobbin thread pulling. and you’ll just ease thosegathers along there until it’s the same size. ok so i sewed down the gathering stitch onhere and i have my thread to pull. and then what i did was i took my row and i foldedit in half and put a pin right here at the middle and folded it in half again and putpins at the quarters. because we’re going

to put these all together and we want themmatched up evenly, then we’ll pull that string and do it. so then i also put pinson the next row at the middle and at the quarters so that we can match them right up. so whatwe’re going to do then is we’re going to pull this one. and we’re going to layit over here. and we’re going to put a pin in our center pins together right here. andwe’re going to go ahead and put one pin there and make sure we take the other oneout. we only need one pin in each place. we’re going to pin the ends together like this.over here is my end. and then we’re going to pin the two quarters together. so i’mgoing to go ahead and pin this quarter over here. we want to get it all pinned togetherbefore our pins fall out and we lose our place.

there we go. alright so then we’re lookingfor our bobbin thread here. and let me see here. i’ve kind of lost it so let me pullthis out. i’ve got to make sure we get that thread right there, that’s the one we stitchedover. and it’s the one that will work perfect for tightening these up. see how quickly thatjust tightened up and made the one piece fit to the next piece. so you’re going to haveto, you know, scrunch it a little bit all the way down. and then, you know, just makesure that that, make sure that your pieces become the same size. you know we’re tryingto shrink one row to the next row. and you’ll end up like a lot of times with a little bunchlike this and you just want to smooth that out so that it’s evenish all along there.you know, you don’t have a big wad of gathers

in one spot. and then we’re going to goover to the sewing machine and we’re just going to stitch this down. so you’ll notice when you’re sewing thisone on you’ll want to make sure your bigger piece is on the top so that you can adjustthings. but you’ll notice that there’s not a lot of, it’s not a lot of tight gathers.it’s just kind of a nice loose gathering that’s going on here. and because you’vegot your middles and your sides quartered you’re not going to have too much gatheringin one place and not enough at the other. and then that zig zag stitch will kind ofshow but that’s, that’s something you’ll just pull out. it’s loose, you’ll, youknow, grab a hold of that thread and pull

that out because you don’t want to leavethat in there. ok so whew, take your time on this, you know this, you know gatheringisn’t, you know it’s not something that’s totally easy but it’s not totally hard either.you just have to relax and not worry about it. . but what we’re going to do is we’regoing to go ahead and do the same thing to the next row. see how cute this looks. we’realready almost onto our last tier. so this one is going to go on here like this one.oh one thing i forgot to mention is if you have a print, like i have doggies on thisone, you want them right side up so check that out when you’re putting your stufftogether. so again on this one i’m going to go aheadand pin the middles to the middles. and the

edge to the edge. and this, i’m actuallygoing to show you how i do this one without doing the running stitch. you know me, i’malways in a hurry and i just, actually i’m not always in a hurry i just like to do thingsfast. i’m the speedy gonzalez of the quilt world. so what i’m going to do is i’mgoing to pin these in half. and i pulled this to make sure my middles meet up like this.and so this is my quarters. and i put a pin there and hook them together. and take thatother pin out. and then i’m going to do one more pinning of eighths. so just likei did the quarters, i’m going to find the middle and i’m going to pin them togetheragain. so then i’m just dealing with little four inch spaces that need, that need my gathersin. it’s just kind of a, of a quick way

to gather without actually using a gatheringstitch. the gathering stitch is definitely the easiest. but doing costuming for so manyyears i, i just, i just learned these little tricks where i do things real quick. alrighty. so now you’ll see right here, this is mytop row. and you’ll see i have this little extra edge right here. and what i’m goingto do when i go to the sewing machine is i’m just going to kind of put a little piece inand put a little piece in as i go along. so you can see the gathering stitch would makethat a lot easier. but i’m just going to do it this quick way, there’s you know lotsof ways to do things. and i’m going to use the quick way. well quick for me i guess ishould say. because i’m only dealing with

like little tiny four inch places, it shouldcome out pretty good. so as you come to the needle i just pull them out and i just keepsliding this fabric underneath the foot right there. and get, you know it’s kind of likemaking tiny little pleats. but it’s, it just works, it’s easy and if you put a littlelotion on your hands they’ll stick to the fabric a little better and you’ll be ableto get them under. or you can lick your fingers a lot like i do. i get in such trouble forthat. i don’t mean to. it’s hard to grab on that fabric sometimes. ok so you just wantto keep sliding that fabric under there and make sure that, you know they stay fairlyeven. it’s like little tiny pleats. just slides under there so easy. i take the, makesure you take the pin out before you get to

it, you don’t really want to sew over thatpin. and i’m pretty close to the home stretch here. there we go, home stretch. alright now let’s take out the pins andtake a look at this. run my finger along here. the fun thing about this little skirt is thatit really will fit anybody from like size two to ten. i mean it’s a darling littleskirt. it gets a little shorter and you can put some leggings under it. and it’s justa cute little skirt. i have some pins in the bottom here. and you can actually sew therings together, you know each, each strip you can sew together as a ring and then sewthe final one together. there’s, there’s just lots of different ways and ideas. okso here we go. here’s our little skirt.

we’re going to put right sides togetherand we’re going to sew this back seam. but we’re just going to sew up to here becausewe still have to string our elastic. so we’re going to lay these right sides together likethis. and we make sure that this right here, that these are going to match up. our contrastingfabric is going to match up. and the bottom is going to match up. so we go ahead and putthose together and sew that back seam and that. and we are so close . we’re goingto go ahead and backstitch on this because this is clothing. we don’t want your skirtto come apart. please no! no wardrobe malfunctions. we want to try and match up our rows of charmsso that they are, so that our stitch lines stay perfectly matched. we don’t want asquare here and a half a square there. so

then what i’m going to do is i’m goingto go ahead and pull this out and i’m going to now feed the elastic through the top. and see this skirt, you know, i can be assmall or large as you want. and, what i did, let me show you first. what i did was i stucka big safety pin on the end of my elastic and then i can feed it right in there. youcan use any size of elastic that will fit in your waist band. the wider the elasticthe, the stiffer and taller that band will stand up. i have elastic that i bought onhuge spools. so i use it for everything, whether, whether it’s the right size or not. it,it goes in whatever it is i’m working on. i’ve got the elastic threaded through here.and you want to make sure that it’s the

size of the waist that you want. so you’llwrap that elastic around whoever the skirt is for. and you know, just make sure it’ssnug. you don’t want it tight. and then you’ll go ahead and just make sure bothends are sticking out. and then we’re just going to sew across here. and i’m goingto double stitch that so that it won’t come undone. make sure it’s good and lined up.there we go. stitch down and back and down. and then i’m going to trim those off. therewe go. trim this little top piece here. and then we’re going to flip this right sideout. it’s already hemmed. it’s got a little waist band. how cute is that? how adorable?oop, i’ve got a little piece up. let me pop that down. there you go. take a look atthat. that’s darling.

let me show you another one over here thatwe made. this is so cute because, i mean, a christmas charm pack, a valentine’s charmpack. anything you want. and you can make this little skirt. now on this one you cansee we didn’t put the top waist band. we just folded over our charm pack and made thewaist band out of that. so you know take this. if you need one a little longer you can addanother row of squares. take this idea and run with it. this is a darling little charmpack skirt. and we hope you enjoyed this tutorial from the msqc.

here we are in step 2 of the yarn braids stylein this step i will be showing you in detail step-by-step how to do your own your yarnbraids before we begin braiding i will first show you how to prepare your yarn you wantto make sure that you predetermine how long you want to leave of your braids to be whetheryou want them above your shoulders your shoulders were below your shoulders i will show youhow to prepare your yarn for your style once your pieces are prepared i'll show you step-by-stephow to braid your yarn before you actually begin braiding your yard braids you want tomake sure that you have already measured out pieces of yarn that you will be using to braidyour hair so to begin you want to know exactly how long you want your yarn braidsrace tobe an hour my arm brace to fall past my shoulders

maybe a little bit above mid back so whatyou want to do to help you as a guide to know how long your pieces will be visibly goingto take the yard on this for you have here you want to unwind a very long amount justto give you an idea of how short or long you want your braids to be so i am just goingto why this off my your piece that i have here number online probably about 2 to 3 feetnow my yarn braids are not going to be that long but this will help me as a guide to howlong so you can simply take your scissors in your going to cut the yarn off from thespool and now it is extremely long piece that i have here i have one end of it and i'm goingto take this in place it where i want it to be so if i want my yard braids to be somewherebit back a little higher than mid back it

is probably going to be at my rib cage hereso i'm just going to take the end of my yarn piece just wanted a place that my rib cagenow i'm going to bring it up to the side of my head here to stretch and see how long iwant it to be so when i pull the thread up this is exactly where it meets up to the sideof my head in this point as well goes down to my rib cage so now what i do is i takethis finger that's up here and i leave it there and i also have my finger here at thebottom below simply want to do is let this piece go with his hand so they can meet downat the bottom of where the yarn meets so where that piece meets here i'm going to cut itoff so that i had even an even piece of yarn so i am going to place my finger here andthen i'm going to cut this piece of yarn and

now want to premeasure to make sure it's thelength i wanted to be so to make sure that the yard braids fall kind of mudpack or littlebit higher than mid back i want to make sure that it's my rib cage at least top of my ribcage so i am going to go ahead and find the middle point of this your data to pieces thateven down here and then am going to place it at the side of my head to see exactly whereit falls and it falls exactly what i wanted to be right at the top of my rib cage so nowthis is the exactly length that i would like for my yarn braids to be if you want youryarn braids to be a lot shorter you only wanted to hit your shoulder then make sure that yourest you are see where on your shoulder here and then you will pinch the yarn and cut exactlywhere you wanted to be and i will serve as

your length so now my length is of how longi want my yarn to be i'll use as a guide to cut all of the individual yarn pieces weremy braids so once again i'm going to take this piece that's the exact length i wantedto be and i'm going to grab the yarn from my spool of yarn meet the cut piece that ihave to the beginning of the yarn and i'm going to try both pieces all the way perfectlydown as possible that i can and then where is going to take my scissors to cut my newpiece of yarn to match that length now i have two pieces of yarn that are the same lengthand if i measured again to the side of my head it falls right at the top of my rib cageso just continue to cut pieces to make sure they are the length so that all of the lengthsof your braids are the same so once again

i grab my piece of yarn and grab 2 piecesor just simply one of them since they are the same length so i will just used both ofthem that i've cut and i'm going to place this here on this yard draw it all the wayup to the end and then i'm going to take my scissors and i'm going to cut the yarn tomake sure matches so now i have read pieces of yarn and if i make sure the bottoms areequal and put it back up to the side of my head is still falls exactly what i wantedto be when you are doing yarn braids we will be using 3 pieces of yarn to do so you canuse more in your using more yarn draw it all the way up to the end to i am going to takemy scissors and then i am going to cut the yarn to make sure it matches that length nowi have 2 pieces of yarn that falls right at

the top of my rib cage so just continue tocut your yarn pieces so that all of the lengths of your braids are the same so once againjust continue to cut pieces that are the same length so that all of the lengths of yourbraids ae the same so one again i am going to grab the lengths that i cut and i am goingto place this here on this yarn draw it all the way up to the end and then i am goingto take my scissors and then i am going to cut the yarn to make sure that it matchesso now i have 3 pieces of yarn and if i make sure the bottoms are equal and put it backup to the side of my head it still falls exactly where i want it to be when you are doing youryarn braids we will be using 3 pieces of yarn to do so you can use more yarn but using moreyarn allows for you to have bigger braids

so what i will show you is with these 3 piecesof yarn how you will braid them onto your head now that you have already measure outyour yarn pieces for your yarn braids i will show you how to position your hands on theyarn so that you can install the yarn for your yarn braids so what you need to makesure is that you already measured out your lengths we will be using 3 pieces of yarnyou can use more yarn you could use maybe 2 pieces but 3 pieces the typical size thatyou want to stick with for your typical yarn size braid so if you are familiar with doingindividual braids like zillions or single braids or box braids the same technique forpositioning your hands applies even though we are using yarn but i will be showing youthe same technique applies to yarn so what

you want to do is make sure that you dividethe hair into its parts so we have 3 pieces of yarn here and you simply want to dividethis into two thirds and one third so we simply will just take one of the pieces of yarn awayfrom the other you are so much you divide that now is perfectly broken up because nowin my left hand i have two thirds of the i originally had in my right hand i have one3rd of the yarn that i originally had so next what you want to do is take your one 3rd andthrow around and wrapped around his two thirds first to form a 3rd part so now the smallpieces going to wrap around this to 2-3rd is like that in your going to bring both theends together and make sure they are of equal lengths for all the parts and now here wehave 3 legs for our braid this 3rd you have

here i brought the piece back around itselfso looks like now there's 2 pieces and there's 2 pieces here in 2 pieces here as well sonow you have this hair that's divided equally into 3 parts for your braid since your braidconsists of 3 sections as well so to further position your hands what you want to do istake your right hand the three main fingers of your right hand position it around yourpeice that we had in the beginning so that small 3rd they wrapped around two thirds youwant to position 3 of your fingers) as close to the meeting point of all the pieces ofyarn as possible once you do that you take your left hand insert your index finger intothe middle of these 2 sections here and your middle finger is on the outside with yourthumb on the outside as well and all the rest

of your fingers will wrap around the threadjust like this so once again i will show you exactly how you want your hands positionedfor the braid to take this 3rd off and bring it back with the 2 thirds making sure allof the legs are equal now what you do a separate this piece of thread into a 3rd and two thirdsso i am going to pinch one off now is perfectly separated into one 3rd and two thirds nowyou going to wrap the 3rd around the two thirds to form your 3rd leg of your braid so onceall the ends are neat and perfect and now you have 3 points for your braid so the partthat was originally a 3rd you take 3 main fingers of your right hand and position iton the hair there any take your left hand insert your index finger into the openingof these 2 pieces here and on the outside

you have your thumb your index finger andthe rest of your hands will go around hair just like that so you once again to answeryour index finger your thumb in your middle fingers on the outside in all the fingersjust wrap around the hair and that's how you want to have your hands positioned now thelast step is to simply take your right hand swirl it underneath insert your index fingerthrough and hold that piece of hair there in between your index finger in your and nowthis frees your left hand so that you can use your right hand for braiding so once againi'm going to show you what just happened so now that you have your hands positioned onyour thread you are going to take your right hand firmly holding hair going to twirl underneathinsert into that v opening there with just

your next finger and pinch the thread betweenyour index finger in your thumb and i your right hand is ready to braid my your lefthand is for so now that you know how to position your hands on the pieces of thread now willshow you how to braid and your left hand is free so now that you know how to positionyour hands on the pieces of thread in your yarn braids before you begin braiding youryarn braids you want to make sure that you prepped the section of hair that you willbe working on so what you want to do is take your comb and part your hair and a desiredsection that you want to begin your braid with also you can use a spray water bottleto mist your section of hair to help you part your hair and detangle through as you prepareyour hair for your braid so what i will be

doing is taking my spray bottle i will justslightly missed the section hair that i want to are to help me part my you want to takeyour comb and you are going to part a section of hair that you that you will be workingi will start by my ear to show you how big you want your part to be if you are familiarwith doing individual braids like box braids you want to go along with that measurementof how wide or big you want your part to be so the section the hair that i will be braidis about half an inch on both ends of how wide you want your part so now you want totake your comb and you're going to detangle through your section of hair and then youare going to apply a little bit of hair gel to the ends of your hair to begin braidingfor your yarn braids to begin braiding i will

quickly show you once again how to prepareyour hands on your yarn so what you want to do is make sure all the ends are equal toone another and you going to take one of the thirds wrap it around the two thirds and thenthe part that was originally a 3rd you want to position 3 fingers on your right hand onit and then take your left hand insert your index finger and use the rest of your fingersto hold the hair in place once you do that you going to twirl your right hand underneathinsert it through this opening with your index finger in you and pinch the hair this in betweenyour index finger in your together this frees your left hand and now with your right handwe are going to begin braiding so i am going to go right up to my part where i am on mysection of hair here and now what you want

to do is take your left hand and put it overyour head to help assist you as you are braiding your first yarn braid so what you want todo is take your left-hand and gather all of the hair with the 3 main fingers of your lefthand which is your thumb your index finger in your middle finger so now what i will dois i will take my right hand now open up my next finger and my index finger and my thumband i will grab all of the hair that i have in my left hand in between the index fingerand thumb of my right though i will grab all of the hair there with my index finger now that i am holding hair going to take myleft hand and i am going to grab the yarn that's on top position it with my 3 main fingersand then i'm going to turn my right hand to right turn to the right keeping everythingnice and tight i hold the hair with my left

hand excuse me i hold the thread with my lefthand and i take my index finger inserted through this opening i created once i twirled my handsto the right i hook this bottom piece of bread here and i add that to my left hand so nowmy right hand is free and my left hand has 2 pieces of section 3 to take my right hand3 main fingers and i am going to grab the hair and the thread together so once i havedown that i have two section pieces of hair my left hand, twirl my left hand to the leftand in this v opening i am going to take my index finger put it through and hook on thatbottom piece of thread there so i am going to add that thread to my right hand here andnow my left hand is free once again and i have 2 separate pieces in my right hand everytime you have to section pieces in either

one of your hands you are going to twirl yourhand to the desired direction so since i have 2 separate pieces in my right hand, twirlmy hand to the right and it creates an opening here in-between those 2 pieces and now thati’m holding my left hand to the thread i take my index finger i hook the bottom piecewith the thread in the hair hair and add that to my left you going to continue this processa couple more times to make sure that the braid is secure so now i have 2 differentsectioned pieces of yarn in my left hand in my right hand the 3 main fingers will holda piece of hair there was a sad 2 sections of hair here mature my left hand to let theleft hand gets twirl to the left the right hand just want to the right so as you seehere two pieces i am going to twirl that to

the left and in this opening in between those2 sections i am going to hook my right index finger and i want to continue the same processtwo pieces here so i twirl my right hand to the right in this opening i’m going to hookthe index of my left hand now to pieces on my left hand so i twirl my left hand to theleft insert my finger into the opening there and hook the bottom piece so now you know that you for the braid onpretty securely if you can let go without unraveling and as you can see a braids startedto form here so from this point which want to do is make sure that all 3 pieces are distinctand you're going to put those pieces into your fingers and continue to braid down tothe very bottom the reason why it's great to put gel at the

ends of your hair here is because once i startbraiding past the hair the slick gel on the ends helps the hair to a really flat withthe yarn then you are just to keep braiding all the way down to the very end of your yarnbraid now you are going to continue to braid down onto the very bottom to you can no longergo any further so now once you braided to the very bottomfor you want to do is grab the end of the braid that you found with your yarn you wantto twirl around your finger and create a knot so you just simply creating a not at the verybottom of the yarn braid once you create a knot you are going to all the night very tightly as tightly as you canand as flat as you can so you can use your fingers to just really flatten that knot andmake it extremely tight were going to take

our scissors and you are going to go backto your yarn braid in you are going to cut directly below that knot there this createsa very safe seal at the ends of your braids so that your braid doesn't come down so ifyou have any extra threads sticking out of the braid you simply grab your scissors andjust snip those pieces all and that is your complete yarn braid so once again i will showyou how to braid your yarn braid so he was a pretty 3rd from the two thirds of the yarnwrap the 3rd round of two thirds position your right hand on the 3rd piece and now theother piece you insert your index and wrap the rest of your fingers around the hair likeso take your right hand turn it under insert the index finger of your right hand and pinchthat hair that's underneath your index finger

between your thumb your index finger and nowyour left hand is free and your hair is still section pieces and we are going to braid sonow once you bring your hands up to your hair your section of hair your hair should alreadybe prepared section the little bit of gel so now with my left hand when i’m goingto do is grab all of the hair securely in my 3 main fingers make sure that i have allof the hair here then i am going to take my right hand open up my index finger and mythumb and grab all of the hair in between my index finger and my thumb so once i graball of the hair and take this piece to move it to the side out of the way a position atpiece in between my left hand with my 3 main fingers my right hand has two section is apair of which were my right hand to the right

so i am going to twirl my hand to the rightand take my index for my left hand insert it and hook that bottom piece of yarn so nowmy right hand is free and my left hand has 2 pieces of hair i take my right hand againin 3 main fingers wrapped be here in the thread it is my left hand has 2 pieces of sectionhere is where my left hand to the weft in between opening at creative and hook my indexfinger and add that piece of thread that to that hand and i have one section of the lefthand with my 3 main fingers and once again the section that has 2 separate distinct piecesyou will turn that to whatever section so my right hand gets turned into the right whichcreates a opening so i am going to insert the index through in hook the bottom pieceto add to my left hand now my right hand has

one section of hair my left hand has two processrepeats the left hand rotates to the left insert into the opening of the bottom pieceof thread and then continue the same process for the thread and once i have hooked thethread onto the braid well enough i should be able to let go of the thread in the braidis still intact here so now from this point i can bring my left hand that was over myhead down more comfortably keep the sections divided as you see here and just continuebraiding to the very bottom of the thread you would just continue braiding to you getto the very bottom until you cant go any further all all once you braided down to the verybottom you just want to grab the bottom grap the bottom of your yarn braid twirl it aroundyour finger to create a knot once you create

a knot you are going to squeeze it reallytight until its as flat and as tight as you can possibly get it and then you take yourscissors once again and then you going to trim off the bottom piece of yarn that's underneathyour knot to complete your braid once you've done that you can go ahead and skim any piecesthat stick out from your yarn braid and then your yarn braid is complete in this step ihave shown you in detail how to do your yarn braid first show you how to section your yardpieces how to position your hands on your yarn and then finally how to braid your ownyarn braids in the next step number 3 i will be giving you my best tips tricks and advicefor doing your yarn braid style

Knitting Machine Patterns

in this tutorial, we are going to learn tomake this modern tunisian quilt, and we can cut away here to a nice photo showing thewhole thing. this is a free pattern and free video tutorial sponsored by knitters pride.i used their products when i designed the pattern and i highly recommend using theirproducts when making this pattern, and we'll talk more about the tools that i used. butfor now, i will let you know, you don't have to have any tunisian crochet experience atall. i'm going to show you how to work tunisian crochet. tunisian crochet is kind of a cross betweenknitting and pearling that makes a really nice flat fabric, that is perfect for crossstitching. we are going to cover all of that.

if you look in the video description fieldbelow, i will also give you a link here to my website and that will let you know thetools you need, the yarn you need, the hook size, everything else is all on there, aswell as links for more information on the tools i used from knitters pride. and firstthing that we're going to do is we are actually going to learn how to work tunisian crochetand that's coming up in the next segment. if you are ready to go on this quilt, you'vegot your free pattern and you've taken a look at the materials that you need, i am goingto talk a bit about the tools from knitters pride that i used when i designed and madethis. and the first thing and the most important thing that i used is this interchangeabletunisian crochet hook set. it has eight different

sizes from e to l in american sizes, and tunisiancrochet takes a long hook because it's like a cross between knitting and crochet. youalways have loops on the hook, like you have loops on the knitting needle. and so you put something...you attach a cordto the size hook that you need and you put a stopper on the end, and this is what youneed to work wide panels of tunisian crochet. and this is a really handy kit to have, ilove it. if you haven't used tunisian crochet hook with a cord in a while, knitters pridehas brought these tools into the new century, these are state-of-the-art tools, they arereally nice to use. i know 20 years ago when i was using tunisiancrochet hooks with a cord on them, the cord

would catch the yarn or always twist up, oryou couldn't slide things across. that is no longer a problem. these are really niceto have. it's also really nice to have an interchangeable set because even though itell you a hook size to use or a needle size in my knitting tutorials, your tension mightbe different than mine, and there's nothing wrong with that, if you might hold the yarna little tighter or a little more loosely, and that's your thing. there's nothing wrongwith that, but you do have to adjust your hook size to get the same stitches per inchthat i'm getting in the pattern or that any designers getting in a pattern, if you wantyour item to turn out looking like the pattern photo.

so my point is that if you start out withhook size k, like i recommend in the pattern, there's always a chance that you're goingto need to go up or down to get the right tension. and tunisian crochet, actually, inmy experience you need a much bigger hook than you think you do. if you always use asize h crochet hook with worsted weight yarn, you're probably going to need to go up justbecause tunisian crochet is a different animal. okay. tunisian crochet hooks, these are awesome.the video description field below will have more information on these and the knit blockers.i talked about these on facebook and everyone went nuts. this is a box of knit blockers.they are what you use when you're blocking items instead of using straight pins. whenyou're blocking square items, like we are

for this quilt, you want to put pins in tostraighten everything out and square it out, but the pins can cause a scalloped edge, justbecause of what they are. these actually, the small ones actually have four pins init, so when you pull it out and stick it in your blocking board, it's holding it muchlonger edge, keeping it from having the scalloped ones. that's the short one, and there's also thislonger ones with 8 pins. these are a great product. i had never seen anything like thesebefore until i got a kit of my own, and these are pretty much all i use for blocking anymore.i really like them. i'll show them in action later in the tutorial, once we get to thatpart of it.

but for now, we're actually going to learnhow to do tunisian crochet which is really fun and pretty quick, so let's go ahead andtake a look at my hands. so we're going to start out with a crochet chain and if you'venever worked a crochet chain before, i'll give you a link here to a slow demonstrationof making a crochet chain. i actually want to leave about a 6 inch tail. and the pattern is very clear about how manyyou need to chain for each section. i'm just going to chain some to give you an idea ofhow to do this. so you have your crochet chain and you see that it's made up of a bunch ofvs on the right side. but if you flip it over, you have what i call the hyphens or it's calledthe spine of the crochet chain on the back,

and that's these little horizontal lines.we're going to pick up stitches in these little horizontal lines, and the first row is alwaysthe one that goes...it's the most difficult to work. it's the slowest one to work. andthe first stitch of the first row is the slowest one to work. so we have the loop on the hook. a lot ofpatterns will have to skip the first spine. let's not skip the first spine, you end upwith a much nicer right corner if we go ahead and pick up the stitch in this first spine.and to do that, just put your hook into that spine, under that spine, grab the yarn andpull up a loop. let me tighten this whole thing up a little bit.

that's it. that's what we're going to do allthe way across. i'm a big fan, you can see of using my thumb nails to get the hook throughthe loop on the spine. and once you get the stitches picked up, the whole thing goes prettyquickly. i'm going to get some yarn here. i believe for the wide panels, and we're goingto talk about the construction of this whole thing, the wide panels have 9 or 44 stitches, but you're actually going to have 45 loops on the hook and that's normal. you alwayshave one more loop on the hook than you have actual stitches showing up. so that's the first row. the first right toleft row. and now to work left to right, we don't turn the work, tunisian crochet is awesomethis way. you grab a loop and pull through

one, and then grab a loop and pull throughtwo, grab a loop, pull through two all the way across. you pull through one on the firststitch, and then pull through two the rest of the way across. and when you finish, youend up with just one loop on the hook. i'm going to show you this again, don't worry.now things are a bit different because we have already picked up stitches in the spineof the crochet chain, but you see these vertical lines going up in the fabric? that's whatwe want to pick up this time and it's really easy. i like how this goes. we have our first vertical line going up intothe loop on the hook, we'll skip that one and we will go into the next one. put yourhook through that loop. i always give the

yarn a tug here to tighten it up. grab theyarn and pull up a loop through the next vertical line. next, all the way across. things get a littledifferent on the last stitch. okay. on this last stitch, we're not just going to pickup through this vertical line. we're going to pick up through the vertical line and thestitch behind it. the vertical line and the stitch behind it, make an upside down v, youwant to put your hook under both of those. and it might take some practice but you'llget it, and you'll see what it is each time. so i'm going to put my hook through the verticalline and then the stitch right behind it, so i've gone under two. and the reason wedo this is so that we have a really tidy left

edge. so grab the yarn and pull up a looplike normal, and now we work a normal left to right row. grab the yarn pull through one,and then grab the yarn pull through two the rest of the way across. that sound you hearis my tunisian crochet hook stopper on the blocking board. once i get some fabric going,it wont make that noise anymore. okay, and then from here on out, it's justlike the last row that we did. we skip the first vertical line, put our hook under thenext one, grab the yarn and pull up a loop, and do that all the way across. you can seehow it ends up going pretty quickly. and then on the last one, we go through the verticalline and the little stitch behind it, so there are two loops on the hook, grab the yarn andpull through both, and then a normal left

to right row. grab the yarn and pull throughone, grab the yarn and pull through two, and grab the yarn and pull through two all theway across. okay, that's tunisian crochet. and this patternis going to tell you exactly how many to chain, exactly how many you pick up, exactly howmany rows to work. it's pretty easy to modify this pattern you can see. and now i want to talk a bit about the constructionof the blanket. i have a very tiny sample here of exactly what the pieces look like.we have borders all the way around, and then we have some cross stitch in the middle thati'm going to show you how to do. but the actual squares of the blanket are bigger than this.i made them this big so they would fit on

screen. so you start with one color and you changecolors, and then you work the white block, or of course you can use any color you want, and you do this in long strips. and then you also do these narrow strips which are sewnbetween the long strips, to give it this quilt block look, even though it's done in longstrips. and it is important that we do it in long strips and not one super long tunisiancrochet blanket in one shot, because the seams actually provide a lot of structure for theblanket and make it so that it's not floppy, it actually holds its shape really well andlooks good. but the seaming is really fun in tunisian crochet, i think, it's just soperfect and goes quickly.

so this is what your tunisian crochet is goingto look like. as you're working it, you see these beautiful little stitches but there'ssomething very important i want to show you, and i worked up this whole piece just to demonstrate, because no one can believe me. this is what it looks like...let me move this. this iswhat it looks like when you're finished with it, honestly, this is exactly like the piecei just showed you. but a little steam goes a long way, all i did...the only differencebetween this piece and this piece, is steam. and the way that i did this was i used thesteam iron, but i never press down with a steam iron. i just hold it over the pieceand blast steam into it. and i actually have a button that i can push on my iron to steamblast out.

and then using these awesome knit blockers, you can pin the pieces into your blocking board or ironing board or where ever you liketo block things out, and these things actually take steam just fine. you can blast steamonto these and it hasn't done any harm to mine. and you can see how handy it is to havethese big things to square everything out. i mean big things, they're not that big butthey certainly have a lot more grip on them than a single straight pin. you can see howthis goes. and once you steam it and you put the knitblockers in it, you do want to check your yarn label to make sure that your yarn canhandle steam. this happens to be a wool blend, a washable wool blend that does just finewith that. and then let it cool and dry and

when you're done, you'll end up with a pieceas flat as the one that i just showed you, which is a major difference. i'm putting myknit blockers away. these are the knitters pride knit blockers, again the informationon where to find this is in the video description field below, if you're watching this on youtube, and on my website. okay. so let's get back to this piece. youcan see how nice it looks once it's been blocked out. and what i did with mine was i workedthe pieces and steamed them out before i cross stitched them. and then once i seamed thewhole thing together, i steamed it out to shape and size. and then once i had the wholething cross stitched and steamed, i actually machine washed and dried it. and my finishedblanket has actually been machine washed and

dried. i wanted to show you that this yarnwas going to hold up and work. okay, the next thing i want to show you ishow to change colors. i'm going to use this tiny sample. i actually could use some scissorshere because changing colors is really easy in tunisian crochet. what you want to do isend after a left to right row with just one loop here, and you have your hook in thatloop and you work a normal right to left row with the new color of yarn, and that willbe your color change. so i'm going to go ahead and put my hook into the next stitch, andgrab this new color of yarn and pull up a loop. and i'm just going to continue to usethe new color of yarn all the way across. and that's my color change. but you alwayswant to do it on a left to right row, i guess

is my point. i'm sorry, i just cut that backwards. i alwaysdo that. you always want to do it on a right to left row. i'm saying the wrong words butdoing the right thing. okay, and then just work a normal left to right row after that, and your color is changed. and the pattern is really clear about where to change colorsand everything else. okay, i think, is that everything we needto show in this first one? i want to show you how to bind off, which is after you finishthe strip, you're going to want to bind it off. grab the yarn pull through one, grabthe yarn pull through two. this is your last row. i pulled through three. okay. so you'llbe over here on the right with just one loop

when you're ready to bind off. and you startit out like a normal row, and then pull that loop through the last one. grab the yarn andpull up a loop, and then pull one loop through the other. and that is binding off, unlessyou drop everything. easily fixed. and you end up with an edge that looks a lot likethe cast on edge, which is very nice. next up, we're going to talk about cross stitchand seaming the blanket together. in this segment, we're going to learn howto do cross stitch on tunisian crochet and how to seam up all of the different panelsof the blanket to put it together. let's go and take a look. here i am with my tiny sample. i have my borderand then the white panel, the white section,

and i think the best way to work the crossstitch is every time...because you're going to do border, white section, border, whitesection, border, white section, border, depending on how big you make the blanket but you dothe entire vertical strip. but every time i finish one white section, i go ahead andwork the tunisian crochet because it's easier. you don't have a lot of fabric flopping around.it's just right here. in fact, i leave, i use my tunisian crochet set and leave thestitches on the cord as a stitch holder and put a stopper on both ends, so no stitchesfall off. and then you have a nice thing to hang onto while you're doing the cross stitch. i'm going to do on this steamed out, example here.and you always want to start cross stitch

from the top to the bottom, and the patternincludes graphs for exactly what to stitch, but you can stitch anything you want in thesewhite panels, really, anything you want. so let's do a close-up here. i have a lengthof yarn on a tapestry needle, that's a couple feet or a few feet, i guess. and i'm goingto come in at the lower left corner of one of these squares. now this is how you haveto start thinking about it. the square starts just to the right of the vertical line, goesacross over the vertical line, straight up and then back across. it will be more clearas i get a couple of stitches on here. so i've come up the lower left corner, i goin the upper right, and then back down through the lower right. it might be better if i didn'texplain it with words, i just let you watch.

upper right, lower right. you can see i'monly working half of the cross stitch. we're going to get this half done and then workback the other way to close it up. upper right, and lower right. just to the right of thevertical line. and look at me, i'm getting all my lefts and rights correct. that makesme laugh. okay. you work this all the way across, asmuch as the pattern tells you to. and then once you...i'm not going to finish all theway across. but once you get the length finished that way, then you go back the other direction.you're going to go into the same holes that you came out of before. you're going to closeup this...you're going to make this cross by going in the same hole here and back downthrough this hole, but going the other direction.

and then when you finish that x, give it atug. you want it to look good. if it's loosey-goosey tension or something, you want to be sureto tighten it up. or if it's too tight, you want to loosen it because the cross stitchis definitely decorative. so going back down into the same hole and out the bottom. i think the cross stitch is so fun. i loveit. i love working regular cross stitch, like cross stitch on fabric. but if i don't thechance to do it much, this is like my chance to work cross stitch. and then when you getto the end of the row, you can go up into the hole where you're supposed to go, butskip down and drop yourself down a row. you see that? then i'm all set up to work thenext left to right row.

you know, you'll probably want to work upa swatch of tunisian crochet to make sure you're getting good gauge. and when you do,you might want to practice the cross stitch a little bit before you actually try it onyour blanket. work on getting your tension nice. anyway, i love it. we'll just shootanother half-hour of video of me doing the cross stitch because i don't want to stop.you know, i think you quite have it, so i will stop there. the next thing we're goingto do is seaming. now this is a mock-up of one of the big panelsbut it's not done yet, and this is a mock-up of one of the narrow panels but it's not doneyet. and i'm going to use a different color of yarn for seaming, which you won't use.you'll want to use a matching color of yarn,

but i want you to be able to see what i'mdoing. this is just the mattress stitch and tunisian crochet ends up coming together sonicely, because every thing is so square and perfect. and so what i'm going to do is go,start with my tapestry needle and yarn and go into the corner of this piece. go throughonce, go through twice and tighten that up, and then go through the very corner of thispiece. okay. so that's your two pieces, pretty muchattached, and i have this tail here that i need to weave in. really clever people endup leaving a long tail for seaming later. i just don't like all that extra yarn floppingaround, so i never do that. okay, so what we're going to do is a mattressstitch and this is just like with knitting

except for we have different looking stitches.i'm going to go...i guess the v goes this way. you want to go under both legs of thev. let me scoot this up a bit. under both legs of the v, going this way, at the veryedge. and then jump over here and go under both legs of the v on this side. okay, that'sthe beginning. you're going to go into the same hole you came out of, go under both legsof the v over there. go into the same hole you came out of over here. you just keep doingthis back and forth. and i like to keep it loose for, i don't know, a couple of few inches. and those of you who have watched me do mattressstitching videos before, you know i love doing this because i love the magic moment of tighteningit all together. it is like magic. okay, i'm

going to go ahead and tighten it up. hangon to it down here and tug on this, and when you do, you get this gorgeous seam. usually what you do is you just tug it andit gets all scrunchy, and then you straighten it back out. and look at that gorgeous seam.and then i usually stretch it back out a little bit, so i can see where i came out of lasttime and go back into that same hole. i'm going to keep doing this up into the nextcolor, so you can see how well this all comes together. okay. scrunch it up and straightenit back out, and look how nice this seam looks. isn't that great? i even used this yellowyarn and you can't see it at all. mattress stitch does leave the seam in the back ofthe work, but it's fine. it's a blanket, it's

helping with structure, helping keep the wholething together. and that is it. that is all the techniquesused in this modern tunisian quilt. i hope you enjoy your free pattern and that's thanksto knitters pride and the products that i used in the video. there are tunisian crochetinterchangeable hook set, as well as their knit blockers, be sure to look for those.and, good luck.
